Life at the University of Sussex
Student Life at the University of Sussex
The Sussex community is a rich cultural mix, with staff and students combined from more than 150 countries. This means there are lots of opportunities to meet people from all over the world.
To help students settle in, the Students’ Union runs a Buddy Scheme, which is a great way to make new friends, while their Residential Life team and Student Connectors organise social gatherings and events.
There are several international events on campus, from One World Sussex week to watching the Super Bowl at one of the bars. Students can buy international food from the on-campus cafés, shops and food stalls, including a weekly street food market during term time. With a Language Café, and societies, students have an opportunity to explore new cultures and meet others who share similar interests.
Careers at the University of Sussex
Employability is at the heart of a Sussex education, and the University ranks 16th in the UK for Employment Outcomes in the QS World University Rankings 2025. Whether students are interested in following an established career path, or shaping emerging industries, there’s support to explore, connect and flourish at Sussex and beyond.
The Careers and Entrepreneurship Team supports students to maximise their employment potential. The team can help students build confidence, find and prepare for placements, polish CVs and network with relevant industries. They’ll help you develop skills to make you a real asset to employers – or even to be your own boss.
The award-winning Sussex Career Lab (AGCAS Supporting Student/Graduate Employability Award 2024) offers a menu of work experience options, including internships and insight visits that help connect students with employers.
After graduation, there’s ongoing access to one-to-one careers coaching, employer events and exclusive vacancy listings, and graduates are invited to join Sussex Connect – a digital community for networking with fellow alumni.
City Life at the University of Sussex
Discover Brighton, the famous seaside city that’s less than a ten-minute train journey away from campus! Dynamic and cosmopolitan, it’s a place where you can express yourself and be who you want to be. Brighton’s seafront is the ideal place to soak up the sun in the summer or take bracing walks on winter days. Along the prom there are cafés, bars and nightclubs, as well as beach and water sports.
The Lanes is a maze of alleyways crammed with quirky boutiques, vintage shops and tempting cafés, bars and restaurants. North Laine has one of the largest selections of independent shops on England’s South Coast and is a perfect spot to grab a coffee and watch the world go by.
Immerse yourself in Brighton’s vibrant international community. Grab some Mexican street food, try Pan-Asian fine dining or buy ingredients from an Afro-Caribbean or Asian supermarket. Brighton’s international community and culture means students are never far from home comforts or trying something new.
Student Support at the University of Sussex
The Student Centre is the place to head for all your support needs. As well as being a modern and flexible space in which to study or hang out with friends, it brings together comprehensive services ranging from practical life skills training to visa advice.
A team of friendly and experienced Student Advisors help students access specialist services on and off campus. This includes disability support and a range of mental wellbeing services including counselling and Chaplaincy. They also hold weekly drop-in sessions for students to speak to an advisor, events and other activities throughout the year.
Student Accommodation at the University of Sussex
In the last few years, Sussex has invested in new campus residences, and offer a wide range of on-campus accommodation options to suit all budgets.
All on-campus accommodation is self-catered, mostly with communal kitchens. About 70% of accommodation is en-suite, while the rest has shared bathrooms. They also offer accommodation that meets access and disability requirements, as well as a small number of self-contained flats and single-person units.
Sussex guarantees international students University-managed accommodation during your first year of study. This includes full-time international Masters students. If you want to rent privately, Sussex has a dedicated Housing Services Team. They offer advice and guidance and can help you look for student houses and rooms.
Facilities at the University of Sussex
Sussex has plenty of facilities on campus. There’s a pharmacy, medical centre, international food store and a supermarket with a post office. The Student Centre is at the heart of the Sussex student experience and is a great place to meet friends, study and access facilities. Whether it’s a simple query or support with a more complex issue, there’s a wide range of information, advice and guidance available there.
There’s a variety of places to eat on campus, including coffee shops, along with a varied, exciting international menu in our Eat Central food court. The library is open 24/7 during term time and offers both individual and group study rooms. Sussex has its own arts venue, the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, which hosts a varied programme of events featuring international artists and performers.
The University are investing to make the campus even better for you, including seeing new student accommodation and a new Health and Wellbeing Centre opening in 2026.
Sports & Clubs at the University of Sussex
Sussexsport is the University’s sports service. They offer two on-campus gyms, a wide range of group fitness classes and courses, sports halls, tennis courts and pitches – with a selection of great value memberships for University of Sussex students.
If you’re new to sport or want to try something different, the University runs a social sport programme. Alternatively, there’s a packed club sports programme (run with the Students’ Union) for those who want to play sport competitively.
The Students’ Union offer over 180 student-led societies and 40 sports clubs. There are also international societies, promoting different cultures and fostering a sense of community for students from around the world.
Sustainability at the University of Sussex
Sussex are proud to be recognised as one of the most sustainable universities, ranked joint 63rd in the world (QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025). Sussex is at the forefront of research on sustainability. Those with expertise in corporate social responsibility, global supply chains, climate and society, and biodiversity and conservation are engaged in projects supported by the Sussex Sustainability Research Programme.
Sustainability initiatives range from offering practical modules on how to create a forest food garden, to incorporating questions about job and food security into teaching and learning, to developing all research practices to be ethical and sustainable. Sussex are also part of the International Universities Climate Alliance, which enables universities to share vital knowledge on climate research, and to inform governments and industry.

Scholarships
Undergraduate country scholarships
Applicants of certain nationalities (Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Turkey and Vietnam) who have been accepted to study a Bachelors course will be eligible for £1,500 per year of full-time study.

Students receive £5,000 in the first year of full-time study. These are highly competitive and only applicants with exceptional academic achievement and potential will be considered. If you have exceptional grades to date, you can apply for a scholarship after you have received an offer to study at the University of Sussex.

GREAT scholarships
The GREAT scholarships scheme is jointly funded by the UK government’s GREAT Britain Campaign, the British Council and the University of Sussex. The scholarships are available for all full-time postgraduate taught Masters programmes for students from China, Kenya and Thailand.
Chancellor’s International Scholarship
Students receive a £5,000 tuition fee discount. A limited number of scholarships are available to international Masters applicants. These are highly competitive and only applicants with excellent academic achievement and potential will be considered. If you have exceptional grades to date, you can apply for a scholarship after you have received an offer to study at the University of Sussex.
