Danial’s NCUK Journey and Subsequent Career Success
For any international student, choosing the right study abroad program is vital. For Danial from Pakistan, that meant studying with NCUK before moving on to his chosen university in the UK – and now, he’s excelling in his chosen career. He spoke to us about how it all came right for him.
You Studied the NCUK International Foundation Year in Pakistan and then Progressed to International Year One, Is That Right?
After the completion of my 12th grade / intermediate study or A-levels, I started looking at different university options locally as well as in foreign countries. I found NCUK via an internet search, and thought the structure, pathway and what the program is all about looked interesting. As I looked deeper into it, I could see how it would align with my long-term plans for higher studies. My time in IFY was brilliant, and I think that was the main reason I wanted to stay for another year – as well as having that extra time to save up for my studies abroad and spend more time close to home.
Your NCUK Study Centre was at Riphah International University in Islamabad – What Was That Experience Like?
As a whole it was an enriching experience! If you want to study a UK degree qualification, the NCUK pathway is very well structured with good support and resources available for anyone who wants to learn and develop themselves before coming to the UK. The support I got from the Riphah University, their teachers, Dean / HODs, mentors, my fellow students and every individual who’s been a part of this journey has been thoroughly amazing! I’m so indebted to all for their efforts, and whatever I am today, a big part of that comes from Riphah and its fraternity.
You Looked at Several Universities Before Leaving Pakistan, and Eventually Chose The University of Manchester. Why?
Mainly because of it being one of the best choices we had at the time in terms of its ranking, research, student satisfaction and surveys from multiple higher education authorities. Also, I found the idea of studying and living in the vibrant and diverse city of Manchester and its surrounding areas very appealing.
And Did Your Experience Live Up to Your Expectations?
The University of Manchester has been really good for my higher studies. It‘s opened up many opportunities, abundant resources, study groups and some good challenges – in the School of Engineering, our group won the annual Robotic buggy project out of 240+ students, and we were presented with the official award at the University conference from the Dean and Head of Department.
I also did a one-year placement with Network Rail as an Assistant Engineer looking after electrification and plant for the Lancs. & Cumbrian region. Throughout my time I’ve also participated in a lot of different extra-curricular activities which have improved my professional communication, interpersonal and networking skills.
You’re Now Working and Living in the UK. Are You Enjoying It?
I’m currently working as an Electrical Electronics Engineer in the UK Rail Engineering Sector, living in Manchester but doing a lot of travelling up and down the country. Overall, it’s a really good learning experience, and it feels good to know that what we do has a positive impact on the UK’s infrastructure and ultimately people’s lives.
What Advice Would You Give Current NCUK Students Who Want to Study Abroad?
Take all the opportunities that come your way – some may work, and some won’t, but that’s how you find your path. Work hard and try to develop your personality attributes, not just the technical aspects but also communication, presentation and professional skills – they’re all essential for success in the professional world. And remember, you never stop learning and developing!
How Would You Sum Up Your Experience with NCUK?
It’s a great opportunity – it’s up to you to make the most of it. It gave me the right support and pathway and presented me with good opportunities which I’ve used to develop myself. It’s been a truly life-changing experience, and I’d recommend NCUK journey to any aspiring students!
