What is the foundation year programme?

A foundation year is a preparation programme that is taken before starting the first year of a bachelor’s degree. It's a kind of study route that covers high school qualifications and helps to progress in higher education.

In foundation studies, students are taught subject-specific knowledge, academic skills like critical thinking, research and writing, and improve English language proficiency to transition smoothly into the university curriculum.

The category of a foundation year programme can be internationally recognised or domestically regulated. International Foundation Year are offered through study centres, that are exclusively made for international students, focusing on foreign academics, culture, and a strong focus on English Language Preparation.

Foundation is also known as a pathways programme as it offers an alternate route to obtaining higher education. The programme is ideal for students who do not meet the university entry requirements or with a non-standard qualification or student who has long study gaps and need to adjust to a new university environment and academic style.

In recent years, foundation year studies have become very popular among international students as it helps them to cover university entry globally within 9 months or 1 academic year instead of two, while boosting confidence and getting guaranteed progression to a student's desired study path.

Student testimony:

“The academic English programme at the Queen’s has been designed very well, and all my tutors are local, so what they teach me is like the native method of how to study in English, so the foundation year helped me learn my English very efficiently… . Basically they separate the module into Listening, Writing, Speaking and Reading. Even now, I still remember the method they taught us. The reading skill I learned from Queen’s which has benefited me until today through my studies and work. Having a degree at Queen’s University, it’s quite helpful for me to find a job, because when i studied architecture there, we got lots of school trips, trying to help us broaden our network to build more connections for the students. And also my tutors were very helpful in terms of my future directions, so it made me to think about what i want to do and what kind of architecture I want to be. I think my suggestion to the international students is try to join more societies, which help you to practice your communication, social skills, and broaden your network.”
