About Manchester

Manchester, is one of the most well-known cities in the UK with many famous attractions to offer. The city is a place of diversity with over 200 languages spoken and an estimation of over half of adults are multilingual. As a whole Manchester is a place that celebrates creativity and difference.

Places to visit

There are plenty of things to see and do in Manchester. From visiting museums and art galleries to taking in the historic buildings and buzz of the city.

The National Football Museum located in the centre of Manchester offers interactive activities, learning about the history of football and all of your favourite teams for free.

The Royal Exchange Theatre offers many different plays performed in the round, a different experience to the normal stage type where the audience sits in front of the stage. Students can watch plays at a discounted price of £7 on weekdays.

Manchester is home to two Premier League football clubs, Manchester City and Manchester United. Both of their stadiums are incredible to see and are worth visiting with many tours offering people the chance to look around and see the team’s history.

The city offers fantastic nightlife with clubs and pubs being located across the city in areas such as the Northern Quarter, the Printworks, and Canal Street.

Many of the clubs and bars showcase the world-renowned music scene, so even if you don’t drink you can still enjoy the music and dance culture that Manchester is so famously known for.

Manchester has many different music venues like Manchester Arena and Manchester Academy attracting popular bands/singers. Other places, more likely to showcase up-and-coming entertainment are Band On The Wall and The Mint Lounge.

Food

There are restaurants that offer fine dining experiences in The Triangle and Spinningfields whilst cost-effective places to eat are located in and around the Arndale. A variety of restaurants are also situated in the Trafford Centre’s food court.

Manchester is home to the second largest China Town in the UK and offers many international restaurants which are showcased annually in the Manchester Food and Drink Festival.

Shopping

Manchester offers a large variety of high street and vintage stores just waiting for you to explore. Near Exchange Square you will find stores such as Selfridges and Burberry for designer goods whilst unique and vintage items can be easily found in the Northern Quarter. Along with the city centre’s Arndale, Manchester hosts the Trafford Centre (a short bus journey away) where you can find a range of stores to shop in. The Trafford Centre is the second largest shopping centre in the UK!

Transport

London is a very busy city so walking is usually one of the quickest means of transport. However, if you like cycling you can hire a bicycle from one of the 700 docking stations for 24 hours and the first hour is free.

Getting around the city is simple. You can easily walk, ride a bike or use public transport such as the tram (Metrolink) service, bus or train (which takes around two hours to travel to London).

Manchester Airport is only 8 miles from the city centre, allowing you to travel to other UK destinations as well as internationally.
