English Language Proficiency

Most Foundation Year programmes require proof of English language ability. Common tests and scores include:


  • Common Language Tests: IELTS and TOEFL are commonly accepted English language proficiency tests.
  • Required Scores: The minimum required scores can vary depending on the university and programme, but typically range from 5.5 or higher for IELTS and 70-80 for TOEFL. no less than iBT at least 60 or equivalent.


Age Requirements


  • Applicants are generally expected to be between 17 and 25 years old.
  • In some exceptional cases, 16-year-olds may be accepted, though their progression options may be more limited.

Academic Entry Requirements For Foundation Year By Country

Bangladesh


  • Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC): Must be completed with an overall average of at least 50% or a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 5.0 scale, including a minimum of 50% in math if further progression requires it.



United Kingdom


  • GCSE/IGCSE/Cambridge International O Levels
            - For O Level/IGCSE (pre-2017): Completion of 5 subjects with grades of CCCCC, typically including Math and English.


            - For O Level/IGCSE (post-2017): Completion of 5 subjects with grades of 4 or above, also including Math and English. 


  • AS Level: Two E grades from a UK A-Level board. 
  • A Level: One E Grade from a UK A-Level board. 
  • International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP): Successful completion with a total of 34 points or more with a grade of 5 or more in both Maths and English. Students must have completed eAssessment. Students entering the IFY via this route may have limited progression outcomes.
  • International Baccalaureate: Successfully complete with strong grades in Math, particularly for engineering pathways. Students in overseas US school systems generally don’t need to provide English proficiency proof. Students with SAT I and either SAT II or AP exams may qualify for International Year One.
  • General Education Development Tests (GED): Must pass all four tests with scores of 145 or higher in each.




New Zealand 


  • National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 2: Achieve an overall pass with satisfactory grades in Math and English.


United States


  • High School Graduation Diploma: Complete and receive the diploma, including for students in overseas US school systems.


Canada


  • Newfoundland and Labrador - General High School Diploma: Finish Year 11 with a minimum of 50% in all subjects.
  • Prince Edward Island - General High School Diploma: Successful completion of Year 11 with pass grades (50% or above) in all subjects.
  • Saskatchewan - Secondary School Diploma: Completion of Year 11 with at least 50% in all subjects.
  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma: Complete Year 11 with a minimum of 50% in all subjects.
  • Quebec - Dipl me d' tudes Secondaires: Successful completion of Year 11 with pass grades (60% or above) in all subjects.
  • Alberta - General High School Diploma: Finish Year 11 with pass grades (C or above) in all subjects.
  • British Columbia - Senior Secondary Graduation Diploma: Successful completion of Year 11 with pass grades (C or above) in all subjects.
  • Manitoba - High School Graduation Diploma: Completion Year 11 with at least 50% in all subjects.
  • Northwest Territories - General High School Diploma: Complete Year 11 with grades of C or higher in all subjects.
  • Yukon - Senior Secondary Gaduation Diploma: Finish Year 11 with grades of C or higher in all subjects.
  • New Brunswick - High School Graduation Diploma: Successful completion of year 11 with pass grades (grade C/60% or above) in all subjects.
  • Nova Scotia - High School Completion Certificate: Complete Year 11 with grades of D or higher in all subjects.
  • Nunavut - High School Graduation Diploma: Completion of Year 11 with grades of D or higher in all subjects.

Australia



  • Year 11: Complete with an average grade of at least 70%, including 70% or higher in Math and English.
