Studying Electrical Engineering Abroad

By Mazharul Islam

My Experience at NCUK

“When I first started my journey at NCUK in Pakistan, the International Foundation Year seemed like a daunting prospect – but I knew that studying with NCUK would open doors to UK universities and the Electrical Engineering degree I wanted to study. As an international student, I faced initial challenges but learned to overcome them and excel in my studies.

A Welcoming Environment

From the moment I arrived at my NCUK Study Centre, it felt like a new world. The support from fellow students, approachable teachers and the friendly environment made me feel completely at home. Although it was a small campus, it provided the perfect atmosphere for studying the International Foundation Year.

Progressing to the International Year One

After completing that qualification, I wanted to follow my passion for Electrical and Electronics Engineering so enrolled for the International Year One, which allowed me to study the first year of my university degree in Pakistan before studying abroad in Manchester, UK.
Electrical engineering is a field I’ve always been fascinated by, and with technology rapidly advancing the ability to create, understand and manipulate electrical control systems is in high demand.

Building on My Interests

My interest in the topic stems from being curious about how things work as a child. Studying physics and mathematics at the intermediate level further fuelled my passion, and there’s nothing I like better than using a screwdriver to explore the inner workings of a device.
I was also inspired by the real-world experience of visiting a power station and witnessing professional engineers at work, which was quite an eye-opener! I saw how their roles contributed to the facility’s efficient working, which helped motivate me to choose Electrical Engineering.

A Well-Rounded Skill Set

As well as my academic pursuits, I actively participate in team sports like football and cricket, which have helped to hone my teamwork and leadership skills. I feel I’m a proactive and goal-oriented person, so I’m confident in my ability to do well in a career that combines art and scientific calculus.

The UK Advantage

One of the reasons I chose the UK for my higher education is because of its world-renowned universities. Studying at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) means learning from leading academics and experts who provide constant support, and being in the UK also offers ample opportunities to develop my language skills and improve my employment prospects.

Looking Ahead

By pursuing a degree in electrical engineering at MMU, my aim is to play an active role in shaping our technological society. I’m keen to expand my knowledge and skills in this field at a higher level of education, and the learning experience in the UK will encourage my independent thinking, critical analysis and deeper understanding of the subject. Choosing NCUK was the first step on my journey towards becoming an electrical engineer, and I’ll always be grateful for the supportive environment, inspiring experiences and the opportunity it gave me to study at world-class UK universities. With my ambition, problem-solving skills and passion for this field, I’m looking forward to the chance to thrive in a diverse academic environment and contribute to the technology of tomorrow.”
